Vacaville High’s Cole Chapman chews on his chin strap on his way to an 11-8 victory over Ponderosa’s Caleb Humbird to advance to the finals at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament Saturday at Stockton Arena. Chapman is one of nine Bulldogs to qualify for the state championships, which begin Friday in Bakersfield.

Freshman comes of age with Bulldogs

Dennis Pendergraft might be the lightest member of Vacaville High School’s wrestling team, but the freshman realized long before the season began that he would have to pull his weight. That was when he was informed by coaches Clint Birch and Armando Orozco that the Bulldogs would be counting on him because they had no one else to compete at 106 pounds. The 14-year-old had to prove he belonged with the likes of Lawrence Saenz and Jake Levengood. Pendergraft survived in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournament by placing eighth to qualify for the Masters meet Friday and Saturday at Stockton Arena.
